How does the thyroid gland effect diabetes?Answered By Editor Various types of thyroid disfunction can affect the ability for people to control diabetes. Combined with the increased prevalence of these problems among people with diabetes (especially women), this can be quite a problem. Hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), for instance, generally causes worsening glycemic control, with the consequence being a need for more and more insulin to control the diabetes. Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) is less obvious, and may even lower the insulin requirement. However, it can still cause serious problems, like hypopituitarism, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases. keywords: Diabetes | Diabetic | Thyroid | Thyroid Gland | Pancreas | Autoimmune Disorder | Hyperthyroidism | Hypothyroidism | Insulin
