Can you answer Bella C <3's question about Diabetes?:
I’m in a social justice group at my College, and we are planning on doing a 24 hour famine this winter. I was just wondering if there is anyway that I can participate, when i am chronically hypoglycemic? Would I be able to do it if I drink juice? thanks

Diabetes Feedback: i wouldnt risk your health for that.
explain your condition and dont participate.
see if you can participate in some other way.
Diabetes Feedback: Your blood sugar is already low and even though you might not have any clinical symptoms, these symptoms will show up if you fast. You will be depriving your body of glucose and your blood sugar will be too low.
Your brain and your red blood cells ( needed to transport oxygen) only use glucose as a source of energy. They can use ketonic bodies if they have to but that is not preferred.
So if you fast you might have these symptoms: sweating, weakness, hunger, trembling…
So i do not think you should fast especially not for 24 hours.
But if you drink A LOT of juice ( fruit juice containing fructose especially concentrated grape juice, glucose syrup) I think you can make it. The important thing is to provide your body with the glucose it needs.
With that said, I still think you shouldn’t fast. It would be better not to take any risks….
Anw it is better to ask your doctor.
Hope that helped.
Diabetes Feedback: I strongly discourage you from fasting for 24- hr , why ?
chronically hypoglycemic patients develop resistance to the normal alarming hypoglycemia symptoms (like swaeting , feeling hungry , dizziness , tachycardia (rapid pulse)) and they go directly to more dangerous signs (seizures , confusion , coma and even death !)
Did you get it ?
normal subjects become sweaty when their blood sugar is below 60-50 mg/dl , but you may feel normal (being completely asymptomatic) even when it is 30-40 , and once it drops below 20-30 you may develop serious symptoms we call it in medicine : Hypoglycemia Unawareness
