Can you answer Joe’s question about Diabetes?:

What are the chances that I will one day have diabetes? I am 16 years old right now.

My grandfather on my mother’s side has diabetes, all of his brothers and sisters have diabetes (all were adult onset), on my dad’s side, my dad’s brother has it. My mom and dad are good, neither of them have it.

Diabetes Feedback: Family history of diabetes is only one of the many risk factors of diabetes. Just because they have diabetes does not mean that you will. If you know the other risk factors and you prevent your self form haveing the risk factors you can greatly decrease the chances of getting diabetes

    Other Risk factors being
    -Family history of diabetes
    -Low activity level
    -Poor diet
-Excess body weight (especially around the waist)
    -Age greater than 45 years
    -High blood pressure
-High blood levels of triglycerides (a type of fat molecule)
-HDL cholesterol of less than 35
    -Impaired glucose tolerance
-Diabetes during a previous pregnancy, or a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
-Certian ethnicities — African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native Americans all have high rates of diabetes

Diabetes Feedback: Type 2 diabetes is the ‘ scourge ‘ of baby boomers and their children and grandchildren.

If you are fat and don’t exercise alot , with your family history , chances are you will probably get diabetes as you age.

My grampas had type 2 diabetes, as did my father and more than likely a few uncles and aunts. I developed it in my late forties.

So armed with the knowledge that it does exist in your family talk to your family physician to find out what you can do to make sure you don’t get diabetes. Watch your diet , exercise , drink alot of water and keep hydrated and notice any symptoms if you have any.

    Good luck.
